Using your employer health benefits at Mandala
Most people who come to Mandala pay through a plan their employer chose for them. The plan decides what is covered, how much you owe per visit, and how many visits a year. The details sit behind your benefits login, which is why the honest answer to "does my work insurance cover this" is usually "we'll check."
Below is how to look, what we know about a few large Portland employers' plans from their own published materials, and how to use a health savings or flexible spending account here. Plans change every year. We verify your coverage before your first visit; call 503-758-9760 or share your insurance details when you book.

If you work at OHSU
Moda runs all three 2026 plans, and acupuncture coverage differs between them.
See the details: If you work at OHSU
If you work at Legacy Health
Legacy+ and the Expanded Plan both run through PacificSource, on different networks.

If you work at Nike or adidas
Neither plan is published. Here is how to check yours in two minutes.

HSA and FSA
What the IRS counts: acupuncture yes, massage only for a diagnosed condition.

Employee assistance programs

Mandala Medicine is an independent clinic and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by OHSU, Legacy Health, Nike, adidas, or any other employer named here. Plan details come from each employer's published 2026 benefits materials and can change.
Check your coverage in two minutes
- Find the carrier name on your insurance card (Moda, PacificSource, Regence, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Kaiser, Providence) and look it up on our insurance chart, which shows which practitioners take each one. Every practitioner at Mandala takes Moda, and every practitioner except massage therapist Thomas Friedrich takes Regence/Blue Cross; the other carriers vary by person.
- Log in to your carrier's member portal or your employer's benefits site and open your plan's summary of benefits.
- Search the document for "acupuncture," "massage," "alternative care," "chiropractic," "physical therapy," or "mental health." Note the copay or coinsurance, the yearly visit limit, and whether coverage is in-network only.
- Call us with the plan name. We check benefits before your first visit and tell you what to expect.
If the plan excludes a service outright (several below do), you can still book it and pay directly, often with an HSA or FSA (see below).
If you work at OHSU
OHSU's 2026 medical plans (the EPO, the PPO, and a High Deductible plan with HSA) are all administered by Moda Health.
What the OHSU guide says about the services we offer:
- Acupuncture. On the PPO, 70% after your deductible in every tier, up to 60 visits a year, with a medical necessity review after 30. On the High Deductible plan, 70% after deductible. The OHSU EPO does not cover acupuncture. If you are on the EPO, acupuncture here is a direct-pay visit and an HSA or FSA can pay for it (see below).
- Physical therapy. Covered as outpatient rehab, with a combined yearly limit; the rate depends on the network tier. Call us and we will check.
- Massage and naturopathic medicine. The guide does not mention either. We cannot tell you they are covered; call and we will check the plan booklet with Moda.

If you work at Legacy Health
Legacy's two 2026 medical plans, the Legacy Employee Health Plan (Legacy+) and the Legacy Expanded Plan, are both administered by PacificSource. They are different networks, and the difference matters here.
- Legacy+ is a narrow network. PacificSource's page for the plan says there is no benefit for out-of-network alternative care: acupuncturists, massage therapists, naturopaths, and chiropractors must be in the Legacy+ network. A regular PacificSource contract is not the same as Legacy+.
- The Legacy Expanded Plan has a broader network and out-of-network coverage, but Legacy's 2026 decision tool says massage therapy is not covered on it. Our acupuncturists, physical therapist, naturopathic doctors, and counselor are in network with PacificSource; our massage therapists are not.
Legacy's employee assistance program is Canopy. Call us with your plan name and we will check your PacificSource benefits before your first visit.

If you work at Nike or adidas
Neither company publishes its medical plan documents, so we cannot describe your benefits here; your benefits portal can. A few things we can say:
- Nike offers a Kaiser Permanente option. Nike also gives employees and their families free, confidential visits with a mental health counselor through its employee assistance program.
- adidas employees have an employee assistance program as well. For medical coverage, follow the two-minute check above and call us with the carrier name.
For either company, the carrier name on your insurance card is the one to look up on our chart.
Health savings and flexible spending accounts
If your plan comes with an HSA, or your employer offers a health care FSA, you can use it for care that the IRS counts as a medical expense.
- Acupuncture is a qualified medical expense under IRS Publication 502.
- Physical therapy and counseling for a diagnosed condition qualify as medical care.
- Massage is not named in Publication 502. It can qualify when it treats a diagnosed condition, since an expense must be primarily to alleviate or prevent illness, and costs that are merely beneficial to general health do not count. Many plan administrators ask for a letter of medical necessity.
- Naturopathic visits are generally eligible when they are medical care to diagnose or treat a condition. Supplements and herbs are generally not, unless recommended for a diagnosed condition.
- Cosmetic services, including microneedling for appearance, are not eligible.
This is general information, not tax advice. Your plan administrator decides what it reimburses.
Counseling through an employee assistance program
Many Portland employers include a few free counseling sessions through an employee assistance program (Spark at OHSU, Canopy at Legacy, and programs at Nike and adidas). Those sessions usually run through the program's own network. Our counselor is Madison Hollis, LPC; the chart below shows the plans she takes.
Who takes which plan
From our April 2026 chart. Coverage is checked per visit, so call before you book.
- Moda: every practitioner at Mandala.
- Regence / Blue Cross: every practitioner at Mandala except massage therapist Thomas Friedrich.
- PacificSource: acupuncturists Lindsey Rockwell, Jake Rockwell, Al Reed, Stephanie Berzon, and Beth Hazzard; Katy Kemp, DPT; Dr. Marie Benkley and Dr. Nicole Priscal; Madison Hollis, LPC. Not our massage therapists.
- Aetna and UnitedHealthcare: the five acupuncturists above and Dr. Nicole Priscal.
- Providence: the five acupuncturists, Dr. Nicole Priscal, and Madison Hollis.

Questions
It depends on your plan. The OHSU PPO covers acupuncture at 70% after your deductible, up to 60 visits a year, and the High Deductible plan covers it at 70% after deductible; the OHSU EPO does not cover acupuncture at all. Call 503-758-9760 and we will check your benefits.
Yes. You can book any service and pay directly, and acupuncture is a qualified medical expense you can pay from an HSA or health care FSA. Massage can qualify when it treats a diagnosed condition; many administrators ask for a letter of medical necessity. Call the front desk for current rates.
Legacy offers Legacy+ and the Legacy Expanded Plan, both through PacificSource. Legacy+ covers alternative care only inside its own narrow network, and the Expanded Plan does not cover massage therapy. Call 503-758-9760 and we will check your benefits.
We cannot see those plan documents, so we cannot say. Look up the carrier on your insurance card on our chart; which of our practitioners take it varies by carrier. Call us with the carrier name and we will check your benefits.
Sometimes. IRS Publication 502 does not list massage by name; an expense has to be primarily to treat or prevent an illness or condition, and general wellness does not count. Many plan administrators accept massage with a letter of medical necessity from a provider. Ask your administrator what it needs before you book.
Employee assistance sessions usually run through the program's own counselor network, and your HR benefits page will show who that is. Call 503-758-9760 and we will check your benefits.
